PIE AmbassadorsThe PIE Ambassador program was developed to share information and communicate PIE happenings with all schools. Each school in the system has an ambassador that represents PIE. This person shares the latest PIE programs available for teachers and students. The ambassador also is a wonderful contact to have in the school if any fellow staff members have questions or needs help from PIE. This liaison is a wonderful asset to both their school and Partners. We appreciate them volunteering their time to make sure all of our information is communicated to the schools. Thank you to our 2009-2010 PIE Ambassadors Tamara Samz-Arthur Edwards Elementary Debbie Fodrie-A.H. Bangert Elementary Linda Thornton-Ben D. The Classroom Connection:
A Beginning Teachers' Toolbox
Partners In Education is pleased to announce a grant award in the amount of $45,000 from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation to fund "The Classroom Connection: A Beginning Teachers Toolbox" to recruit and retain highly qualified teachers in the classroom. Teaching is a profession that loses thousands of dedicated members each year, putting those most vulnerable children and youth at risk of failing to realize opportunities afforded to them through quality education. Partners in Education is committed to stopping this loss by designing and implementing a high quality beginning teacher support program that will keep the best teachers in the hardest to staff disciplines, teaching in the most challenging classrooms, and working with underserved children. Teacher’s Toolbox is an innovative effort to provide students and teachers with the resources they need to meet the educational challenges of the 21st Century. It is estimated that teachers spend between $500 and $1000 of their own money each year on supplies for their classroom. The development of a “Teachers’ Toolbox" store would allow beginning teachers, who often do not have the supplies or financial resources, access to items needed to implement meaningful instructional activities. Teachers’ Toolbox is an incentive based teacher store filled with supplies most often needed by beginning teachers. A few of the items stocked in the store are: technology items, classroom supplies, teaching aids, opportunities for professional development and hands-on manipulatives. Beginning Teacher Mentors and Administrators will help recognize Beginning Teachers for going above and beyond with symbolic apples which will enable them to shop throughout the year to equip their classrooms with the tools and support necessary to be highly effective teachers. Through support of the community and local businesses, this "store" will be a wonderful asset in recruiting highly qualified teachers to Craven County Schools. Partners In Education would like to thank Craven County Schools for donating the location for this unique and special store. The store will be located in a central location within the county for easy access for the teachers and will have great hours accessible to the teachers. The store will be operated by volunteers and donations will be greatly appreciated and necessary to keep the "toolbox" up and running. Please contact Jennifer Wagner for more information.
NASA Space CampPIE was very fortunate in 2006 to receive a donation for a scholarship to NASA Space Camp®. With a state focus on science, technology, math and engineering, PIE decided it was important for the students of Craven County Schools to continue this program and through funds raised we had the ability to send 2 students to NASA Space Camp®.
An application and interview process for the students in the middle and high schools was developed. Each school had the opportunity to nominate 3 candidates to go through the application process. The applications were narrowed down to 6 candidates to continue through the interviews. 2 students stood out to the committee and this year and were selected to attend camp over the summer: Emily Price from New Bern High School Josh Bunn from West Craven Middle School
Emily and Josh had an experience of a lifetime!
Here are some of Emily's daring days at Space Camp
PIE is excited to announce that through a grant opportunity from The Harold H. Bate Foundation, we will be able to expand this program to include 1 more student, plus 2 teachers!
Space Camp has been chosen by Forbes Magazine as one of "Eight Places to Live Out Your Fantasies" so apply today!
We have received Student Nominations for this year's adventure and thank you to everyone who took the time to apply. ALL of the applications were worthy of attending so it was very difficult for our committee to chose.

In conjunction with ECU/Project Heart, these seniors will receive a $1,000 scholarship to the college or university of their choice for committing their time to being a peer mentor at their school. This program has been a great success at West Craven High School and we are very fortunate to be able to continue it this year at New Bern High School. If you are interested in learning more please contact the following coordinators at their school: Kimberly Fischer-West Craven High School Renea Welch-New Bern High School
We are currently raising funds for our upcoming seniors to have the opportunity to participate in this program for the 2009-2010 school year. If you are interested in donating, please click here.
Children’s Book DriveDuring the week of November 16-20, Partners In Education, in partnership with the Sun Journal and Craven Smart Start, will have drop boxes located throughout the community for children’s new and gently used books. These books are put into the hands of the children who need them the most. Each school in Craven County is a designated drop-site as well as various locations in the community. The schools are then given a chance to give books to students in need and the remaining books are distributed to programs that assist children. The following organizations have benefited from your contributions: YMCA, The Little Red Book Mobile, Family Literacy, Havelock Boy’s and Girl’s Club, Craven Literacy Council, National Guard and local churches. Help make a difference in a child’s life and donate a new or gently used book during the week of November 16-20.
VolunteeringIf you are interested in learning how you can help make a difference in Craven County Schools, please contact us. Our community partners, board members and volunteers are what truly helps support our efforts to enhance the educational experience for all. |
